Christian Aid week. May 11-18.
May 6 2025
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK runs from 11 May and this year the focus is on Guatemala. As with many countries it has been badly hit with climate change and small communities are struggling to grow sufficient crops to provide food all the year round. Also industrial agriculture is taking over much of the country’s natural resouce to feed the world’s richest countries.
Aurelia (pictured) is an inspirational farmer and community leader and belongs to the Indigenous Q’eqchi’ community of the Alta Verapaz region. Christian Aid work alongside a local partner Congcoop who provide specialist agricultural training. With this Aurelia has gained skills and knowledge to cultivate native seeds that are better suited to the changing climate. She’s producing her own organic fertiliser, creating nurseries, constructing rainwater collection systems, and making nutritious food and medicine for her chickens.
Aurelia’s community is so impressive; there may be no electricity, mains water or phone signal, but this hasn’t been a barrier and they are determined to survive.
